Level 3 Foundation

Level 3 · Foundation Certificate in People Practice

Your first CIPD qualification, decoded unit by unit

The Foundation Certificate is where most people-profession careers begin — four core units that take you from HR-curious to evidence-backed practitioner. We break down every learning outcome, command verb, and assessment expectation.

Is This your Level?
Level 3 Foundation Certificate

Written for first-time academic writers

Most Level 3 learners haven’t written an assessed assignment in years — sometimes ever. Every lesson at this level assumes nothing: command verbs are unpacked from scratch, referencing is taught step by step, and STARL scaffolding shows you how to turn everyday work moments into markable evidence. Guidance, never answers — you’ll write it yourself, and you’ll know how.

The Method

Six Steps in Every Lesson — Tuned to Level 3 Depth

At Foundation level the six steps stay gentle: verbs like 'explain' and 'summarise' are decoded with everyday analogies, theory is taught before it's questioned, and every STARL prompt starts from situations a junior practitioner actually meets.

01

Unpack the command verb

02

Teach the theory, critically

03

Show what markers reward

04

Scaffold with STARL

05

Point to wider reading

Common Questions

Asked by Level 3 learners

Do I need any qualifications or HR experience to start Level 3?

No formal entry requirements — the Foundation Certificate is designed as a first step. If you’re working in any role that touches people processes, even informally, you already have the raw material for your Evidence Bank.

How long does Level 3 take?

Most providers run it over 7–12 months part-time. Our courses are self-paced and structured so a busy week costs you momentum, not progress — each lesson is a complete, resumable unit of study.

Which unit should I study first?

Follow your provider’s sequence. Most start with 3CO01 for context, but 3CO04 carries the largest assessment load — which is why it’s our flagship course and worth previewing early whatever your order.

Is your content aligned to my assessment brief?

All of them are aligned to the current cohort brief, with brief-specific content held in dedicated modules that we refresh each cycle. Free unit guides cover the stable learning outcomes that don’t change between briefs.
